Why Do Cambodian Youth Choose to Study Korean?

By Molyka Bin

Second year student

Department of Media and Communication

Many Cambodian youth, especially youth in Phnom Penh, are now interested in studying foreign languages including English, Chinese, French, Japanese, and also Korean and now Korean is more popular than the others.

Cambodian youth expected to be able to have a lot of chances to get jobs if they knew Korean. These considerations make the growing number of Cambodian youth interested in studying Korean very fast. Just only one of the Korean schools in Phnom Penh, Kang Nam, now absorb about 1,000 students study Korean.

That’s why, in Phnom Penh recently, many Korean private schools and universities provided degrees in Korean literature, such as Royal University of Phnom Penh, Life University in Sihanouk province, Angkor University in Seimreap, and Battambang University in Battambang province.

“The increasing number of Korean companies and investors are the most important reasons that make Cambodian youth study Korean”, said Hwang Hye Ran a visiting lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Language.

Chhoun Madina a second year student studying Korean at the Institute of Foreign Languages, explains that he decided to study Korean because he loves Korean style songs and movies and it make him wants to speak Korean and know as much as possible about Korean. Secondly Korean is another new language that is popular in Cambodia now. And thirdly by studying Korean, he would have a lot of chances to get a scholarship and even a good job both in Korea and Cambodia. Now Madina have a chance to go and studies in Korea for exchange program in the next month.

Having a good job and a chance to get a scholarship is what parents want to see when their children grow up. Mrs. Neang Sotanny 42 year old mother said that, “I really expected that my daughter would have a lot of chance to get a good job”. Neang Sotanny whose daughter studies Korean is planning to allow the other children to study Korean too. She sees the increasing number of Korean companies, which nearly cover almost all sectors of business in Cambodia including garment factories, banks, and also tourism. She expects that at least her daughter will have a good job.
